Tuas' new highly automated facility produces compostable and biodegradable packaging and carriers – Mothership.SG

Companies may soon find cost-effective biodegradable alternatives to single-use plastic packaging and bags in Singapore.
The launching ceremony was officiated by Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for Social Policy Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
The 200,000-square-foot facility is designed to support eco-solutions provided by an Asian company jointly established by Print Lab, Singapore’s largest printing agency and one-stop printing solutions provider, and Times Printers, a member of the Times Publishing Group.
With the launch of the Green Lab facility, non-plastic packaging and carriers will be manufactured in Singapore to help companies in the region reduce their use of plastic.
Green Lab has the first fully automatic, highly customizable biodegradable paper bag making machine.
According to the press release, they will also be equipped to produce “the first fully compostable plant-based alternative” to plastic tote bags.
Green Lab will also be the first printing agency to fully integrate PVC-free banners and stickers as a base product.
Companies can also find a wide range of fully compostable F&B packaging and tableware in Tuas.
An example is CASSA180, a bag made from Indonesian industrial waste cassava root, which can decompose within 180 seconds in boiling water or 180 days underground.
Green Lab co-founder and Print Lab Group CEO Muralikrishnan Rangan said Green Lab will meet the needs of many companies in Singapore trying to reduce shipping, transport and storage costs, as well as their carbon footprint.
These products will not be expensive due to automation and existing workers can re-operate machines in Singapore, he added.Additionally, customers save on shipping and time when they buy supplies from Green Lab rather than suppliers in China.
Siu Bingyan, president of Times Publishing Group, shared that they hope the launch of Green Lab can be a “model” for other businesses in Singapore and a “catalyst for a more sustainable future”.
