Mondi's paper pallet wrapping film scores low on environmental impact

Vienna, Austria – On November 4, Mondi released the results of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study comparing traditional plastic pallet wrapping films to its new Advantage StretchWrap paper pallet wrapping solution.
According to Mondi, the LCA study was conducted by external consultants, complied with ISO standards, and included a rigorous external review. It includes a virgin plastic stretch film, a 30% recycled plastic stretch film, a 50% recycled plastic stretch film, and Mondi’s Advantage StretchWrap paper-based solution.
The company’s Advantage StretchWrap is a patent-pending solution that uses a lightweight paper grade that stretches and resists punctures during shipping and handling.Top LCA findings show that paper-based solutions outperform traditional plastic pallet wrapping films in multiple environmental categories.
The study measured 16 environmental indicators across the value chain, from raw material extraction through to the end of the material’s useful life.
According to LCA, Advantage StretchWrap has 62% lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to virgin plastic film and 49% lower GHG emissions compared to plastic stretch film made with 50% recycled content %.Advantage StretchWrap also has lower rates of climate change and fossil fuel use than its plastic counterparts.
Advantage StretchWrap also has a lower carbon footprint than 30 or 50 percent recycled virgin plastic or plastic film.According to the study, plastic stretch films did perform better in terms of land use and freshwater eutrophication.
When all four options are recycled or incinerated, Mondi’s Advantage StretchWrap has the least impact on climate change compared to the other three plastic options. However, when paper pallet wrapping film ends up in landfill, it has a higher environmental impact than other films evaluated.
“Given the complexity of material selection, we believe that independent critical review is essential to ensure that LCA delivers objective and reliable results, with a focus on the environmental benefits of each material. At Mondi, we incorporate these results as part of our decision-making process. , in line with our MAP2030 Sustainability Commitment,” said Karoline Angerer, Product Sustainability Manager for Mondi’s Kraft Paper and Bags business.”Our clients value our attention to detail and how we collaborate to develop solutions that are sustainable by design using our EcoSolutions approach.”
The full report can be downloaded from Mondi’s website.Additionally, the company will host a webinar detailing LCA on November 9 during the Sustainable Packaging Summit 2021.
