September means schools reopen, the air is fresh, and there’s a new DC event to coincide with the recent DC event.let’s start
I understand why it’s not necessarily a good thing to know ahead of time which properties are for fans of the Titans TV series or any series, because you’ll immediately limit your audience. That said, it’s obviously not that subtle way for DC to conjure up bad wigs and mid-level CGI to those world “titans” instead of 60 years of comics.
TITANS UNITED: BLOODPACT #1Written by CAVAN SCOTTArt by LUCAS MEYERCover by EDDY BARROWSVariant cover by DERRICK CHEW1:25 Variant cover by TAURIN CLARKE1:50 Variant cover by STEPHEN BYRNE Hispanic Heritage Month Variant cover by JORGE MOLINA $3.99 US | 32 pages |6 of 1|Variant $4.99 (card stock) On sale 9/20/22 Titans are back, united against a common enemy…isn’t it?When Tim Drake woke up, everything seemed to be gone, he lost his uniform and seemed to run out of time.Surely he’s just fighting alongside Nightwing, Superboy, Starfire, Beast Boy, and Donna Troy? But where is the crow and what connects her to the terrifying five?A blood sacrifice is coming that will change the world forever.
While I don’t think anyone is under the illusion that “Saga of World at War” is actually the biggest Superman story since “The Death of Superman”, which is more or less explicitly stated by multiple people, it’s been a story for over a year now. .While Battlefield Saga officially kicked off last fall, that’s clearly the goal starting with Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s first installment in early 2021.In modern comic terms, that’s relatively thin air, because while runs can often last more than a year, it’s rare that there’s a straight line between the beginning and end of the story that lasts that long.
But, as my DC3cast co-host Zach recently said, Brandon Peterson and Will Conrad are drawing the ending, which means DC lost interest in the story at some point.I don’t mean to bash any of the artists, but so far none of them have been featured in this story (except for a few Conrad filler pages) that DC often trots to fill in the blanks or end a story with no fixed artist .It’s a shame that the story seems to be failing because Johnson has done a really good job of crafting a meaningful story. But, as is often the case, art betrays it somewhere.
SUPERMAN: WARWORLD APOCALYPSE #1 BY PHILLIP KENNEDY JOHNSON BRANDON PETERSON AND WILL CONRADC COVER BY MARIO “FOX” FOCCILLO1:25 Foil Variation Cover by MIKEL JANÍN Distressed Variation Cover by STEVE BEACH $6.99 | 56 Pages | One Shot | Variations $7.99 (Card Stock) On Sale 8/30/22 It’s all leading up to this: The final battle between Superman and Mongol, and the final battle between Majesty and Mongol’s unfinished champion! The identity of the masked stranger has been revealed, revealing a shocking betrayal that threatens to crush Superman’s rebellion forever! But since World at War’s fate rests with Superman, the last chance to restore Superman’s powers now falls to Natasha and John Henry Irons. From the visionary creative team of Philip Kennedy Johnson, Brandon Peterson and Will Conrad, Empires Rise and Fall, and the Fourth World is reborn in this jaw-dropping final chapter!
Only comics can escape phrases like “Don’t miss the kickoff to Action Comics #1050 Countdown!”!It’s almost an “almost an honor to be nominated” nonsense.I know they’ll have to pique readers’ interest in the next few months before the next milestone big issue, but “Superman and Steel Rebuilding Metropolis” would be the perfect pitch, especially for villains old and new Commitment and need for “the whole super family”.
But alas, Will Conrad.DC is sticking with its stuffed friends instead of introducing a funny name for the three-phase arc.David Lapham has been doing backups, just ask him to do three questions.Find some exciting new talent.Bringing back a classic DC artist.Short-term poaching from Marvel books. Is there anything other than the usual suspects?

This post is both a PSA reminding people that the series is still running, highlighting intriguing Bat-family stories that would be unlikely to have a home in DC if it wasn’t for books like this, and also point to a better corner for being an outsider Featured in “Future State” since The Bat Book.Brandon Thomas has told the story on and off in this title since its launch, and it handles it the same way most superhero books should: it features Brian Edward Hill ( Bryan Edward Hill) and his collaborators’ recent “Batman and the Outsiders” comic. And expand on it, introducing new ideas and concepts, while letting go of some old ones, but never feeling like it’s trying to solve something that’s already been done. It’s not retconning, it’s embracing continuity and finding ways to bring in new ideas while working within the most recent framework.Well written, and a pleasure to read.

Was it a gimmick to have Bruce Campbell write a sergeant?Rock horror movie title?100%, yes. Will I give it a try for all the goodwill Bruce Campbell has earned in my life?Damn, I will.Is that the sergeant?Rock a character that DC hasn’t had a good idea for in decades?Well, he is.Do I think Eduardo Risso will learn from this book?Absolutely.

DC’s anthology issues are almost always on the list for this column, as they’re a great place for nostalgia and new faces. It will be interesting to see Connor/Parmiotti back at Harley, as will Sam Humphreys.Great to see stories from the current team of Stephanie Phillips and Riley Rossmo.I’m curious what the Dodsons will do, or Cecil Castellucci and Dan Hipp sitting on the sidelines. These questions are always interesting, and it only makes sense for Harley to have had such a large share of the DC structure over the past decade.

Earlier in this column, I mentioned that there was a comic that was essentially a sidekick with Titans, and how I got involved for that reason.Well, this comic takes place in the world of Shazam movies and I support it 100%.Will this make me a hypocrite?Shut up, here’s why!

The recent “Dark Crisis: Young Justice” series has done a lot to build my confidence in Megan FitzMartin as a writer. In her original Tim Drake story, I thought her ideas were great, but her execution was sloppy and boring. But “DC:YJ” has shown more proficient at setting an interesting story and then not dropping the ball when it has to actually do something.
I love the idea of having Tim have his own Gotham corner, and I love the idea of building a supporting cast around Bernard.Tim is arguably the “best” Robin in terms of what Batman envisions for Robin. He benefits from post-Jason Bruce, Dick as a mentor, and a group of heroes he adapts to.This book can build on all of these while still telling a new story.I just hope FitzMartin can rise to the challenge.

It’s very rare for an event’s in-between question to get a spot on this list, as there’s usually nothing in an essay call that excites readers so much in the text itself.#4 The significance of the event call is somewhat moot, because at this point people either participate in the story or they don’t.But let’s look at the last line of this request:

Now, hyperbole is the name of the game here, but I love that DC uses their solicitation to promote San Diego Comic-Con, and I’m impressed by DC’s tendency to use SDCC as a place to release big news.Hopefully this isn’t a press release Tuesday before the scam, but an actual moment in the group, as DC has been doing this for years.I think the last big thing is the Sandman Universe announcement of 2018?

Let’s explain why this is good: This isn’t the 1,000th “Damian and Bruce fight for morality” fight. This is not another cosmic story.Mark Wade is telling a Bruce/Damian story that’s been building for months, and doing it in a way that makes it its own thing, and that the recent father-son reconciliation still holds up and makes sense.Wade is really, really good at doing what Brandon Thomas did to Outsiders; he took all the pieces that were made for him and added them to tell a story that was built on them.
Plus, this sees the return of Mahmud Asrar.Asrar first caught my eye during New 52, when he never got enough credit for the work he did.Now that he’s back in Washington, I can’t wait to see what he thinks of Lazarus Island.
